Why Play Matters in Love | Fun & Connection for Couples

Rediscovering the Joy of Play

This morning, I went for a run on the beach. Families were out together — kicking soccer balls, splashing in the waves, and building sandcastles. There was a lightness in the air. The only “goal” seemed to be enjoying the moment.

It made me wonder: Why do we give ourselves permission to play on holidays like the 4th of July… but forget about it the rest of the year?

Why Couples Struggle With Play

Many couples struggle to integrate fun and playfulness into their relationships. Common reasons include:

  • Time pressures from work and family

  • Financial worries (“fun costs too much”)

  • Cultural beliefs that play is frivolous or unproductive

In a society that values productivity, play often gets dismissed as a guilty pleasure. But when couples avoid it, relationships can start to feel stale or disconnected. You may even find yourself asking: Where did our spark go?

The Science and Soul of Play

Play isn’t just for kids. As adults, we still crave novelty, laughter, and joy. In fact, play is essential for:

  • Connection – reminding you and your partner how to enjoy each other’s company

  • Stress relief – helping you shake off the seriousness of daily life

  • Creativity – opening new ways of thinking and problem-solving

  • Romantic energy – rekindling that spark of spontaneity

What Play Looks Like for Adults

Adult play doesn’t have to mean being silly or spending lots of money. It can be as simple as:

  • Going for a Sunday bike ride or playing tennis together

  • Walking barefoot at the beach or hiking in nature

  • Playing a board game, card game, or even a round of mini-golf

  • Having a spontaneous dance party in the kitchen

  • Wrestling, tickling, or letting yourselves be goofy together

The focus isn’t on winning or accomplishing something. It’s on being present and sharing joy.

A Gentle Challenge

If you catch yourself thinking play is a waste of time, consider this:
Play is productive. It produces connection, joy, and vitality — all of which your relationship needs to thrive.

So here’s a challenge: carve out just one time each week for playful connection with your partner. Protect it like you would a work meeting. Your relationship deserves that spark.
